Pictor Chat — Create Images by Chatting

Pictor Chat (Create by Chatting) is an assistant that lets you create and refine images conversationally inside the editor. Just go back and forth naturally: "Make an image like this" → check the result → "A bit darker."

💡 Who is it for? Anyone who finds it easier to describe what they want in words rather than fiddling with every option in the panel. When the picture is only in your head and you're not sure which button to press, you can start with a conversation and drop the result straight in as a card background.

Pictor Chat — create and refine images just by chatting

1. Opening · Handling the Window

  • Press the speech-bubble button at the bottom-right of any screen to open a floating chat window (the same button is on the Library, Image, and Video screens). Drag the window header to move it anywhere you like.
  • Use the icon in the window header to switch between the docked side panel ↔ floating window. Your last choice is remembered — the button reopens it the same way next time. When docked, drag the left edge to adjust the width (double-click resets it).
  • Where a result goes is decided by the screen you are onApply to card in the editor, Add to timeline in the video studio, Open in editor in the library or settings. On the video screen you can also adjust the timeline ("drop clip 3") in the same conversation.
  • It doesn't dim the screen (no dimming overlay), so you can keep editing while chatting, and the conversation is kept when you switch modes. The conversation also follows you to other screens and survives a page reload (kept for 7 days from the last message). Outside the editor, Apply to card is disabled with a "no card to apply to" notice — it turns back on once you open a card.
  • On first open, you'll see example hints like the ones below.

Examples: "Make a dawn scene of an export container port" "Brighter and more lively" "Give me 3 more in this style"

2. The Three Things Pictor Chat Does

(A) Conversational Image Generation

This is the core feature. Depending on how you phrase your request, the AI figures out the right way to handle it.

What you wantSay it like thisWhat it does
Create new"Make a dawn scene of an export port"Generates a new scene (based on a reference photo if you attach one)
Refine"A bit darker", "Warmer colors"Adjusts only the tone, color, and mood while keeping the composition of the previous image
Get variations"3 more in this style"Generates several versions (usually 2–4) on the same theme

ℹ️ "Refine" changes things subtly or moderately depending on your wording. Adding a degree like "just a little" or "change it a lot" helps it come through better.

(B) How-To Assistant (Help Desk)

It answers how-to questions like "Where do I find what I saved?" or "How do I make card series?"

  • It answers based only on the Studio guides and won't make up features that don't exist.

(C) Triggering Image Tools by Voice

In environments where the image tools are enabled, you can call the tools directly from the chat.

Say it like thisTool that runs
"Remove the background from this photo"Background removal (remove_bg)
"Change just the background to a sunset port"Background replacement (product_bg)
"Scale it up 4x"Upscale (upscale)
  • The image to be processed is the photo you attach in this message; if there is none, it uses the most recently generated image.

ℹ️ Image tool calls only work in environments where STUDIO_TOOLS_ENABLED is on. For detailed tool descriptions, see Image Tools.

3. How to Operate

Attaching Reference Photos · Card Backgrounds

You can send images along with your message using the buttons next to the input box.

ButtonFunction
📎 Attach reference photoUpload your own photo to pass as a reference ("Sent as a reference photo with this message")
Attach current card backgroundAttach the background image of the card you're currently editing

ℹ️ If the card has no background image, you'll see "The current card has no background image", and unreadable files show "Couldn't read the image — please try again with a JPG/PNG/WebP file."

Handling Results — Apply to Card · Download · View Prompt

The result bubble shows progress ("Generating…" / "Thinking…") followed by the finished image.

  • Apply to cardReplaces the current card's background right away ("Applied to the card background"). You can revert with Undo.
  • Download — Saves the image as a file.
  • Prompt used — Expands the actual prompt and seed value that were used, so you can reproduce or reference the same result.

Conversations · New chat

Conversations in the chat header lists your past chats, most recent first. Titles come from your first question, and picking one resumes that chat (its context comes back too). The trash icon deletes it.

New chat puts the current chat aside and starts on a blank slate — use it when you switch to a completely different topic. Past chats stay in the list, so it starts immediately without a confirmation dialog.

PlanConversation retention
FreeThe most recent 1 chat, for 7 days
SubscribedThe full list, kept indefinitely

ℹ️ Chats are stored with your account, so they follow you across devices and sessions. On the free plan, starting a new chat pushes the previous one out of the list. ℹ️ Very long chats may have their beginning trimmed; when that happens the list shows "Earlier messages aren't shown" at the top.

💡 Troubleshooting (FAQ)

Q. I want to change just the color of the image I just made. A. Don't create a new one — give feedback like "a bit warmer" or "slightly darker." It refines only the tone and color while keeping the composition of the previous image.

Q. How do I put an image made in chat onto a card? A. Press Apply to card in the result bubble and it goes straight into the current card's background. If you don't like it, revert with Undo.

Q. I said "remove the background from this photo" but nothing happened. A. Image tool calls only work in environments where STUDIO_TOOLS_ENABLED is on. You also need an image to process, so 📎 attach a photo or generate one image first, then make the request.

Q. The results keep coming out similar because of the previous conversation's context. A. Reset the context with New conversation and try again. The style and feedback history is cleared and it starts from scratch.
